REGIONAL ANAESTHESIA Does regional anaesthesia really improve outcome?
نویسنده
چکیده
Editor’s key points † Outcome studies showing differences in mortality between regional and general anaesthetic techniques are probably impossible. † Meta-analyses have shown improved outcomes for specific endpoints associated with specific regional anaesthesia techniques. Summary. In recent decades, a number of studies have attempted to determine whether regional anaesthesia offers convincing benefits over general anaesthesia. However, today we interpret meta-analyses more carefully, and it remains unclear whether regional anaesthesia reduces mortality. However, regional anaesthesia offers superior analgesia over opioid-based analgesia, and a significant reduction in postoperative pain is still a worthwhile outcome. Recent developments in technical aspects of regional anaesthesia have the potential to provide significant advantages for many patients in all age groups. Moreover, studies focusing on specific outcomes have shown benefits for regional anaesthesia used for surgery and postoperative analgesia.

This review examines the recent evidence of an impact of regional anaesthesia on important clinical outcomes. Evidence was obtained from a variety of studies, with increasing numbers of analyses of large databases being prominent. The benefits and limitations of these approaches are considered in order to provide a context for interpretation of the data they generate. There should be little arg...
متن کاملRegional anaesthesia to improve pain outcomes in paediatric surgical patients: a qualitative systematic review of randomized controlled trials.
Summary The development of analgesic interventions in paediatric surgical patients is often limited by the inherent difficulties of conducting large randomized clinical trials to test interventions in those patients. Regional anaesthesia is a valid strategy to improve postoperative pain in the adult surgical population, but the effects of regional anaesthesia on postoperative pain outcomes in p...

INTRODUCTION The use of Regional Anaesthesia and Nerve Blocks is becoming more popular and recognized as an effective means for providing anaesthesia for minor surgery. When used optimally, Regional Anaesthesia and local blocks can provide ideal operative conditions. Successful outcome of the technique depends on injection of the local anaesthetic solution as near the target nerve as possible. ...
